Happy Birthday
Monday evening, I took Faith temp and realized it was trending down. As I watched the weather forecast, which called for freezing rain and snow, I had a sinking feeling I was in for an interesting 72 hours. Faith was scheduled for a c-section on Friday the 13 at noon. I could tell there was a good possibility she was not going to wait for Friday to have the puppies. So, I packed everything I could think of that she would need to go into the car.
Tuesday morning, as I took Faith’s temp and noting it had dropped one degree in the 24 hour period, I called IGH Vet. The next milestone we were looking for was a temp under 98.0 with a bounce back up to 99.0 (or so) shortly after. I knew the three o’clock reading would let me how far away Faith was to delivering. The 3:00 reading was lower but definitely not the miles stone we were looking for.
As Faith’s temp was dropping, so was the temp outside. And the precipitation started to roll in. By 4:30 there were a couple of inches of snow north of the Cities and misting and drizzle in Rochester with the promise of freezing rain and possible snow. The thoughts of heading to the Cities to be closer to IGH Vet definitely were passing through my mind. With prompting from Faith’s favorite Inventory Manager and a call from Helping Paws, the decision was made to head directly to the Cities.
At 6:00 AM on Wednesday Faith’s temp dropped to 97.9 and we were off to IGH Vet for an ultra sound to check on the puppies. The ultra sound revealed that the puppies were developed to a stage that if they were born early they would be okay. Wondering how bad the stretcher was and what kind of complication it would cause, I asked the Dr. to check it too. She could not find one. So we waited for Faith’s Favorite Dr. to check for the stretcher. To our surprise it had dissolved and was gone. (Actually this is not unusual.) Faith could have her puppies naturally.
Now the decision to head to Rochester or stay in the Cities. After some creative thinking by HP’s Special Projects Coordinator, we headed over to her house. She collected the whelping pen (the one Cheers had been using) from Helping Paws and we set it up in her family room. Less than an hour later, Faith began the whelping process. The first puppy was born at 2:30 pm, Wednesday, March 12, 2008. She had 9 puppies, 6 girls and 3 boys.
